Second, the maintenance manager asked me what size charge controller for 400W solar panel would be suitable for a small backup battery he was building at home. I didn't know offhand, so I looked it up. For a 12V battery bank, 400W divided by 12V is about 33A, so you'd want a 40A MPPT charge controller. For a 24V bank, a 20A or 25A controller is usually enough. But the bigger point is that it was a completely different world from the 590W commercial system we were installing. The Result and What I'd Do Differently

According to FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims must be substantiated. That's aimed at marketers, but it's a good filter for buyers too. If a vendor can't explain the number behind a claim, I assume the claim is empty.
What I'd do differently? I'd ask for the installer's electrical license before the quote, not after. I'd also make a checklist of every 'may be extra' line item and force the vendor to price it before I compared. And I'd push back on the 48-hour deadline—the stress of second-guessing wasn't worth it.
Transparent pricing doesn't mean the lowest price. It means a number I can defend to finance, a scope I can check on site, and a vendor who doesn't disappear when the inverter throws its first fault code. In this case, LONGi was the transparent option. And Kevin is still running.
