Here's my opinion for 2025: price per watt is not the most important number on a solar module spec sheet. It never was, but right now it's the easiest number to quote, and that makes it dangerous.
Let me back up. I'm the office administrator and procurement coordinator for a 24-person commercial solar installer. I'm not an engineer. I manage the orders—or rather, I coordinate them; the engineers make the final call. Roughly $1.2M to $1.4M in annual spend across 15 vendors. We once bought from a vendor whose warranty process required a site visit report, a lab test, and a freight appointment before they'd even open a claim. Flexible panels can be the right solution, but they need the same documentation. What's the flex radius? What's the maximum mechanical load? How does the warranty handle mounting on a non-standard surface? If the answer is “we've never had a problem,” then I don't have a spec sheet; I have a marketing story.
But aren't you just paying for the brand?
Objection: “Of course you're going to say LONGi is great—you're a LONGi buyer.” Fair. But I'm not saying every LONGi module is perfect for every roof, and I'm not saying price doesn't matter.
